Saigon: The City of Sound

I’ve always loved doodling geometric patterns, and one day I decided to take that hobby digital. During the COVID lockdown, it became a small daily ritual. I spent about 30 minutes sketching, with just an Apple Magic Mouse. Most of these sketches draw inspiration from the clean lines and bold shapes of Southern Vietnam’s modernist buildings.

This project may evolve into a more defined style over time, but for now, I’m keeping it simple with black-and-white sketches. (You can see a preview in the cover image above.)

A Work in Progress

After finishing the illustration, I thought it would be fun to print the pattern on a steel mug as a gift for my friends and family. Below is a quick mockup I made.

After checking with suppliers, I realized small-batch printing would be costly, and the artwork would need resizing to fit the mug. In the end, it felt like too-much-effort, so I decided to keep it as a prototype.

4 years later, I wanted a poster to display on my bookshelf, so I decided to print this COVID-era illustration. Printing it on a mug was a little too expensive, so a poster felt like the perfect alternative.
